Tipping the Scale of Justice

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares continues to pursue the truth as to why the Loudoun County school system failed to prevent the sexual assault of two students and lacks transparency regarding the ongoing investigation.1 Our schools should not be a safe space for sexual predators and Jason Miyares is dedicated to making that happen. In contrast, the Governor of New York defends their “No Bail” law despite the chaos that results from repeat offenses.2 This helps explain why so many people want to leave New York. Similarly, the Biden Justice Department conducts ideologically based prosecutions while ignoring or minimizing certain criminal behaviors.3 The Administration’s targeting of pro-life activity combined with the ignoring of pro-abortion crime mirrors the legal activity of authoritarian regimes. Instead of this unjust tipping of the scales, we need a Justice Department that focuses on criminal behavior regardless of political motives. While we won’t truly have that until a new Administration in 2024, we can at least hold this one accountable by sending Yesli Vega to Congress as our 7th District Representative. Ending Toxic (And Septic) Identity Cultures

In one sense the United States can be considered a grand experiment in putting an end to toxic cultures. By toxic culture we mean the existing of inappropriate boundaries. Typically, we think of this as the exclusion of certain groups based on socioeconomic status, race, or religion. Toxic cultures, however, are not limited to these categories. Our Founding Fathers looked across human history to identify the ideas which maximize individual freedom. They focused on the boundaries associated with economic freedom. Later our leaders addressed the injustice of slavery. Still later came the issue of civil rights. These were all just efforts. However, with the War on Poverty, the Counterculture, and the Roe vs Wade decision, we began to walk down a different path of toxicity. In these cases, we began to remove boundaries that are better left in place. Like a living cell, the breakdown of boundaries and filters creates a toxic system where good things go where they are not needed, and bad things go where they are not wanted. The latest examples of this are the creation of “Synthetic Sex Identities” (SSI)1 and the pre-grooming of children at drag shows2. Proponents of removing the associated cultural boundaries are creating a different form of toxicity. The removal of these boundaries is not without it’s victims. A teacher in Hawaii felt no shame about child porn and inappropriate relations with a student.3 The NCAA has created unfair standards for women’s swimming.4 Certain boundaries in society exist for the protection of people and not to put an end to happiness. Conscientiousness is a critical personality trait for success in life. It is dependent on boundaries and habits. The tearing down of boundaries in our culture is creating a different form of toxicity. It may be better called a Septic culture. We don’t want the stereotypical racist and sexist forms of toxic culture, but we also don’t want the decadence of septic forms.

The Right to Life

The recently decided case at the Supreme Court, Dobbs vs Jackson, overturned the Roe and Casey cases regarding abortion and put the delicate issue back in the hands of state legislators. It’s important that we take a moment to see what this new decision enables, not just what it allows the states to forbid. Not only does the decision enable states to protect the unborn, but it establishes an unencumbered right to child support. After all, if the unborn child is not safe then no child support payment is safe. Both the child and the support payment exist for the same reason. In this sense it reinforces the bonds of matrimony in that men have responsibilities towards their children as much as mothers. Also, this latest decision removes an enabler of the dangerous trend of postfamilialism, the cultural loss of interest in raising children. The Dobbs decision does not outlaw abortion – it simply restores the states as great experiments in liberty. It removes two poorly worded court decisions. If you don’t believe us, just go and read Roe and Casey – even Justice Ginsberg though Roe a poorly worded decision.* In the end we must weigh the costs of Roe versus the costs of Dobbs. We must ask ourselves, “What policies will minimize human tragedy and remain sustainable?” Roe liberated some women but created an assault on the nuclear family, causing many women to go without child support from men who were alienated from the choice of their child being born. This assault on the biological two-parent family has contributed to an unsustainable culture as indicated by the declining fertility rate. The defense of the biological two-parent family does not require an assault on other types of family structures, but it does require recognition as the most sustainable form. An Antidote to Mass Shootings

Left wing politicians and most of the media are currently apoplectic regarding mass shootings and gun control. One can argue for the “well regulated” part of the Second Amendment and the failures to fully enforce existing laws. That seems to apply in the case in Highland Park. However, since guns have long been with us and mass shootings have not, the root cause of mass shootings must lie outside the scope and content of our gun laws. In nearly every case, to include the recent Highland Park shooting, the perpetrator is a wayward young man. What is going on with young men in the United States that causes this? A common thread in these instances and many other social disfunctions is the disparate treatment between boys and girls. Rightly so, our movies speak of empowerment for women, and we have “Girl Power” t-shirts in our stores. But for an entire generation, boys have been downplayed. In our movies boys are frequently shown eating, sleeping, and playing video games while the girls are solving all the problems. High school class presidents and other officers can easily be all girls in a mixed gender school. For nearly 50 years Roe v Wade eroded the father-child bond. Our schools and our culture do not provide many meaningful examples of manliness. Instead, at-risk boys are often either ignored, abused, given low expectations, belittled because of the “patriarchy”, or made passive by postmodernism. Any one or combination of these can produce a potential shooter. Both pop culture and our education culture often produce a sense of ennui, which is a combination of boredom and annoyance. The answers to this problem lie not in leftist postmodernism, but in the classic concept of manliness. This has both spiritual1 and material2 components. It is summed up by C.S. Lewis in the word “chivalry” which he describes by quoting Morte Daurthur saying, “Thou wert the meekest man that ever ate in hall among ladies; and thou wert the sternest knight to thy mortal foe that ever put spear in the rest.” In other words, manly behavior consists in rapidly managing your emotions to fit the environment. Mass shooters lack that ability. We must rebuild a culture which inculcates this in our young men without all the other baggage of the past. Inept Administration

It is painful to spend so much time on criticism when there is so much economic success in Republican states like Texas, Florida, and Tennessee. The evidence is not found in the analysis of pundits but in the internal migration data showing those states are where people are moving. Because of the last 10 years of Democrat rule, Virginia is not among those most desired states. Nonetheless, so much in our country has gone negative since the current President took office. The current circumstances do not match with the promises made. No where is this more true than in gas prices, the declining stock market, the availability of baby formula, and the inconsistency in prosecutions of those who break the law. The President and his most dedicated supported have the high gas prices they want to better enable renewable resources. That result is good but it comes at the expense of average Americans and to the benefit of Putin’s oil sales. This is a big driver of the current inflation rate. Next, President Biden is virtually absent from the talk regarding the declining stock market. Meanwhile the ~40% of Americans invested in the market continue to suffer and those dependent on pensions also suffer as the losses continue. Thirdly, The President essentially acknowledged that he has been oblivious to the baby formula crisis until recently. Finally, this administration aggressively prosecutes those who entered the capital on 6 January 2021 but ignores those who burned businesses in Portland, OR and continue to encourage threats to the Supreme Court. Thanks to this administration no one remembers people like Theotis Cason, an African-American whose business in Portland was vandalized. These four trends show the President lacks the qualities we need in the executive office. He promised so much and has delivered so little. We may not have always liked what President Trump said, but the results were there. The stock market grew, benefiting all in different ways. African-American and Latino unemployment reached record lows. Inflation remained in check. We have an opportunity on June 21st to pick our next candidate for the 7th Congressional District. Be sure to get out and vote before or on that date to send a powerful message to this Administration and this Congress that we want reasonable policies back that give us positive results.

The recently announced GDP shrinkage of 1.4% came as a surprise to most analysts.1 But then again, economists’ continued employment depends on the micromanagement inherent in the current White House. This comes on top of high inflation rates and wage declines.2 The first year of this administration benefited from the free-market friendly policies of the prior administration. Partway through the second year the consequences of the Nov 2020 election are becoming much more clear. Gas prices are hurting the most vulnerable and yet this administration blames the energy companies. If that was the case they would have raised prices earlier under the prior administration, which was supposedly more friendly to them. If, as claimed, President Biden’s economic agenda was so energy-friendly the environmental groups would offer more than the tepid criticism they expressed on Earth Day. The reality is that this administration remains hostile to free-markets and hostage to far left extremism. Next month is our first chance to vote on the team that will hold this administration accountable. We have an outstanding field of candidates for the 7th Congressional District and they need your support. Whichever one we pick will require us to rally around them and advocate for the policies which will turn our economy around. We must not only put a stop to the dangerous agenda being pursued by Democrats but lay out how free markets provide the best opportunities for individuals and businesses in their pursuit of happiness.

To replace the recently departed Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, President Biden has nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, an individual who, despite a lengthy academic pedigree, recently stated that she cannot define a category of persons that Justice Ginsburg fought so hard her entire life to defend. Whether she is aware of it nor not, she is part of a movement that believes that the Communist Revolution failed because Karl Marx did not account for culture. The Critical Movement adds those in robes (judges, clergy, academics) to politicians as those necessary to co-opt or control to achieve a micromanaging government. They are not interested in ending structural racism and sexism but rather leveraging it to gain power. Many of them may mean to govern well but they are always followed by the power-hungry elite. When they replace corrupt leaders, in the end they are just replacing them with other corrupt leaders. If you don’t believe us, just ask the diaspora of Cuba, Russia, and Venezuela. The nomination of Judge Brown Jackson places Title IX governance and funding at risk. If Judge Brown Jackson cannot define a woman, then how can she make judgements with respect to women’s rights. We only need to look at the case of Lea Thompson, a transgender swimmer who went from being average in men’s competitions to displacing hard-working women at the top of the rankings for women’s collegiate swimming. What recourse do these women have for their loss? Judge Brown Jackson is unlikely to be willing to defend them. Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, to include transgender persons. That does not mean, however, that self-identity trumps biology. Young women deserve a safe space in which they can thrive athletically without being challenged by someone raised with male levels of testosterone and muscle mass. We must strive to build a world in which one form of prejudice is not simply replaced with another. In Defense of Freedom

The situation in Ukraine demonstrates that the President and his party are simply not up to the task. While we would prefer that “politics ends at the shore”, failure to acknowledge this reality would put us all in the same state of oblivion. The issue with our policies towards Russia is that the Administration rhetoric and decisions consistently come at least 2 weeks too late. The Administration is reactive, not proactive. This reality is a far cry from the rhetoric three years ago when Candidate Biden said, “his [Putin] days of tyranny… are over.”* The President’s rhetoric is much more timid than that of the candidate. As was the case recently in Afghanistan, we see more hand wringing than action. Instead of protecting American citizens in Afghanistan the Administration procrastinated and many remain trapped in Afghanistan. The crisis in Ukraine is the continuation of this pattern. This Administration has a similar foreign policy with respect to other corrupt regimes from which people are fleeing to the United States. Instead of encouraging local and individual freedom in those countries, the Administration enables these regimes with an immigration policy which further stresses our environment. We must instead restore our nation as an inspiration for freedom across the world. We are overdue for change in Congress this November – change that is Free-Market Friendly, Family Friendly, and Future Friendly. We need a Congress that will better partner with the Administration in order to achieve these three goals. The Source of Strength in Our Economy

Last month the Congressional Representative for most of us in Potomac District, Mr. Gerry Connolly, sent out an email claiming that President Biden’s first year in office was a success in spite of the facts. He cites GDP growth, business performance, strength of the dollar, job growth, lower unemployment, and vaccination rates. There are some major problems with his explanation. Mr. Connolly’s minimizing of the inflation rate runs counter to our own experiences at the gas pump, which hits the less well-off harder than those with more income and assets. Furthermore, anyone who claims the first year of a Presidency had such sweeping impacts is living in an alternate universe. Most Americans know this. The rising gas prices and the declining stock market are the sectors much more responsive to the President’s anti-energy and anti-free market policies. These reflect the true impact of the last year of Presidential policies. Fortunately, more than half of the states are led by Republicans either in the governorship and/or in the legislator. These states have been the driver of economic recovery despite the COVID crisis, not the Democrat policies of micromanagement. Even US News & World Report had an article acknowledging this fact.* The lack of a state income tax correlates the most with prosperity. The same principle could once again be applied more effectively at the Federal level. Mr. Connolly is living in an alternate universe. We need your vote in November so that Mr. Connolly departs our political universe and retires to his own political universe. We would then wish him the best in the imaginary land where you never run out of other people’s money.

The Trojan Horse of Socialism

There are two sides to the Trojan Horse of Socialism* which require nuanced analysis. The first side is Critical Race Theory (CRT) advocated by Cultural Marxists. The second side is the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) movement. To address economic disparity, CRT is the Cultural Marxists diagnosis while DEI is the prescription. To be more specific, only the components of CRT and Equity have the core socialist ideals. These ideals have a long history of tyranny and/or economic decline. In contrast, diversity and inclusion are valued components of leadership in any successful organization. DEI is a reboot of the old affirmative action programs which did not achieve their intended results because they were based on failed assumptions.
The real racism in the United States includes the ideas that: 1) minorities have not benefited from the nuclear family, 2) most minority people (-Asians) cannot thrive in the traditional Western political/economic model without assistance, and 3) minorities have not benefited from the compassion and influence of the Christian church. Anti-racism is not the accurate term to describe the far left. The better term might be Counter-Racism. Their goal is not to end racism but to create a new form of racism that can offset the cultural racism of the left that continue to harm minorities.
As a response we must maintain the concepts of diversity and inclusion while also removing the term equity from our vocabulary and completely root out the above-mentioned assumptions of CRT. It is also true that our military structures should present unity in diversity as a model for our international partners and a stark contrast to the forces of our international adversaries. We must clearly communicate the benefits to all regarding the family, the free-market, and faith in God. These three things have served minorities well in the past and can do so once again if the truth is laid out clearly. We must all do so with our friends, neighbors, and co-workers in order to continue the cultural and economic climate which attracts people from all across the world.

Mandela Effect in Politics

The Mandela Effect is based on the idea that at times large numbers of people believe things that simply are not true. Many people seem to have a memory of Nelson Mandela dying in prison even though he was released and later became the first President of South Africa. This same phenomenon occurs in politics. So-called “Progressives” tend to do this more frequently. Most of these people believe that Scandinavian countries are socialist even though they abandoned many of these policies decades ago. Progressives believe that the Dixecrats became Republicans when 90% of them stayed Democrats. Progressives believe that abortion will make every child a wanted one and yet the foster system remains overburdened. Progressives claim they want to create more affordable housing yet housing prices are skyrocketing where they control zoning. Progressives claims that social security really has a trust fund yet economists are uncertain. Progressives claim to want to protect the environment but continue to advocate for immigration policies which increase the burden on our environment. Locally, Progressives believe that Loudoun County is lead by Republicans and are unaware of assaults that have recently occurred in two different schools by the same perpetrator. It is ironic that Progressives have so many Mandela Effects in their belief system because the socialism of Mandela’s political party, the ANC, had created an economic crisis in that country even before COVID-19. What Mandela Effects in politics can you think of? This may be a useful approach when talking with your liberal neighbors. We are not driven by anger but by a desire to see good governance in our county, our state, and our nation. The 2022 elections are an opportunity to drive positive change. Good Governance (Finally) at the State Level

The recent election of Glen Youngkin, Winsome Sears, and Jason Miyares at the state level and the renewal of Republican leadership in the House of Delegates represents a win for good governance. Two of the three current Democrat statewide office holders had a history of blackface. The third had been accused of questionable sexual behavior and then he failed in his attempt to shut down CBS reporting on the accusations. Prior to this election, the state legislature was on the verge of ballot initiatives designed to undermine the traditional family and water down the responsibilities of citizenship. This election represents a clear rejection of the far-left policies of Congress and the White House. We must now maintain this momentum and shift our attention to the 2022 election. Congressman Gerry Connolly voted to impeach President Trump and now we see the accusations against the former President are unraveling with the arrest of the main source associated with the impeachment. Mr. Connolly wants to subsidize Planned Parenthood, an organization rooted in a history of scientific racism. Mr. Connolly came to Congress from Fairfax County, a county from which taxpayers have been fleeing from in greater and greater numbers since the year 2000.* It is time for Mr. Connolly to retire. Conversely, Republican Congressman Rob Whitman continues to advocate for sound fiscal, family, and sustainability policies. This is evidenced by the fact that all the counties he represents are areas gaining taxpayers. Both Rob Whittman and the eventual opponent of Gerry Connolly need your help in the next year to bring better ideas to Congress. Don’t be a political wallflower – get out and take a stand!

Our State Needs You and Your Neighbor to Vote Republican

Many of us have already voted early. On 2 November we go to the polls to inform the final decision for Virginia in 2021. This election matters. Glenn Youngkin is a successful businessman who knows what our state needs to succeed. Terry McAuliffe is a career politician who empowers the bureaucracy rather than the people. Winsome Sears is committed to principle whereas Haya Ayala went back on a campaign contribution pledge, and without explanation. Jason Miyares has the legal background to get the job done right. Mark Herring, with his blackface history, is not the right person to lead our legal system. Maria Martin has the background to protect parents and keep our schools focused on education rather than political advocacy. Luke Torian is a mere bystander when it comes to inappropriate material in our schools. Ben Baldwin has the practical experience to get our finances back on track. Elizabeth Guzman is committed to the command economy policies that are failing all across the world. Gina Ciarcia has the experience to fix the problems in our schools. Candi King takes big money from utility companies – she can’t be trusted with the public good. We need to send a message. Send a message to Richmond that we want diverse leadership in Richmond and that someone with blackface material in their past has no business leading in Virginia. Send a message to Richmond that parents have rights and that illicit and predatory material should not be in our schools. Send message to Richmond that we want an opportunity culture rather than socialism masquerading as an equality program. Send a message to Richmond that we are not satisfied with a grade of “C” for Virginia’s finances.* Send a message to Richmond that we want to be a taxpayer friendly state where people actually want to move here. Small Area Plan with a Big Problem

The Potomac District Supervisor, Andrea Bailey, has recently sent out a troubling newsletter with some information about the supposed “Small Area Plan”. Besides the fact that the newsletter title has her name in it (as if it is all about her), the troubling and deceptive idea of a “growing and blooming PWC” must be examined in more detail. The dog whistle here is that she really wants political domination through changing the political makeup of the county. The dog whistle is corroborated by her recent leveraging of the police to intimidate political opponents.* That aside, her advocacy of this proposal comes at the expense of the environment. Her article shows the population and acreage of both the “Rural Area” and the “Development Area”. When you do some math with the numbers she shows, you will find that the Rural Area population density is 147.8 people per square mile. The Development Area is 2,166.9 people per square mile. Both numbers are well above the 40.8 people per square mile that environmentalists believe is sustainable. Why would she sabotage the goals of her supposed allies? Even if you account for the fact that most of the county is airable land, it can only sustain 102 people per square mile. What does she expect will happen? Will people move from the more densely populated area to the less dense? No, new people will move into the county making our county even less sustainable and doing more damage to our environment. Then we must consider the worsening traffic, which is bad enough already. We talked about this back in March. Any growth plan must be accompanied by a request for the state to change current law to mandate 100-year planning horizons. Ms. Bailey has given us numbers that are completely disconnected from environmental protections. This plan demands peaceful but emphatic opposition. We must not wilt at her recent political intimidation. She has used her husband’s influence with the police to send an officer to the home of someone complaining of political intimidation. Fortunately, the police officer who went to the home saw through the politics and common sense prevailed at the front door. There is no guarantee that this will happen next time. Whether Ms. Bailey intended to influence the police to achieve political intimidation, or she lacks the judgement to properly interpret a message from a constituent, it is very clear that she has no business leading in Prince William County. It is vital that we send her a powerful message in November by electing Glen Youngkin, Winsome Sears, Jason Miyares, Ben Baldwin, Matt Lang, and Maria Martin to serve in Richmond next year. Structural Racism

Radical progressives claim that the United States is inherently racist. They use race as a wedge to advance a micromanaging economic agenda. While we agree that structural racism is present in the United States – it’s just not what the radicals claim. There are six things that both old southern Democrats and modern Progressive Democrats believe. These six things are: Darwinism in the Schools, Abortion in Minority Communities, Expectations of Intemperance, Dismantling of the Nuclear Family, A Patronizing Oligarchy, and Skin Color Denoting Moral Authority. While their motives are allegedly more noble now, the effects of their policies have been just as harmful.
Progressives feel intellectually satisfied by Darwinism being taught in the schools. It satisfies their spirit. Unfortunately, what it also does is provide an intellectual justification for scientific racism. The Tuskegee Experiment was one result among many such examples. From this scientific racism was the advent of abortion in minority communities. These were the progressives of the early 20th century. The abortion mills were necessary, in the views of racists, because minorities were incapable of temperance. They believed, as progressives do now, that people cannot control themselves. Because people should not be expected to control themselves, the Nuclear Family is not needed. In the 19th century Democrats broke up the black family because they were slaves to white folks whereas today they break up the black family because they are allegedly slaves to their bodily desires. If such people are incapable of temperance, then only a patronizing oligarchy can rule. In the 19th century it was the plantation owners but today it is the bureaucracy. Finally, in the 19th century skin color denoted moral authority. Modern progressives are no different – they’ve just initiated a role reversal regarding which color skin denotes moral authority. The irony in all this is that radical progressives have their ideas rooted in the writings of a dead white male – Karl Marx. Like those who suffered under communism, ultimately it is still minorities who suffer from progressive ideas which at their roots have not fundamentally changed.
The Republican party offers a different vision. The Creed of the Republican party of Virigina includes the phrase, “all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free society”. Republicans turn this phrase into reality every day. Republican states like Texas and Florida continue to welcome African Americans in large numbers while the percentage of African Americans in Democrat-led states like New York and Illinois continues to decline.* This occurs because Republicans offer freedom rather than bureaucracy, choices rather than micromanagement, and faith in the individual rather than faith in the system. The free market is anything but perfect, but it offers more opportunity for people than a large bureaucracy. We ask that you talk to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers about these ideas. Volunteer for a Republican candidate. That is how change happens. Virginia is at a crossroads. For six years now taxpayers have been leaving our state. We need Republican leadership in Richmond to reverse this trend and make Virginia an economically welcoming state.

I saw a man recently wearing a T-shirt on which was written “My Independence Day is 1865, not 1776." The shirt is a reminder that each generation will define its own Independence Day, but always informed by the ideals of the first Independence Day, a day when we first committed to the American creed “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Of course the 1865 date is a reference to the end of the Civil War. That war, that generation’s quest to hold faith to the American creed, is presaged by the biting criticism of Fredrick Douglas when in a July 4th speech prior to the war he said “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license….notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery. "The arm of the Lord is not shortened,"”
Note the end of Fredrick Douglas’ speech. While criticizing America with a vigor unmatched today, he retains hope in the underlying American creed, in the American future.
His hope has been rewarded in our age as we embrace our own obligation to advance the American creed. Just recently we have rightly seen that obligation further brought to life in the celebration of Juneteenth as a national holiday. That reality did not need the endorsement of the current Federal Government. Many states, municipalities, and individual groups planned Juneteenth celebrations long before the current Administration embraced the cause. And why not, Juneteenth reminds us how slavery was the opposite of what America ultimately represents.
A fine example of our national creed, our national obligation, was on display last month in Dumfries Virginia when the charming Dumfries Councilwomen, Ms. Cydny Neville, organized and led a parade and remembrance at the Dumfries Slave Cemetery. It was a sober yet inspiring event, without the deceitful negativity of a critical race theory diatribe. Ms. Neville reminded us to not let Juneteenth be just one day out of the year. She is right! Like July 4th, let both days be a daily reminder to take the “arm of the Lord” to reach out to your neighbor, be that person, white, black, Hispanic, Asian, young, old, rich, or poor.
While you are at it, take a drive over to Dumfries and visit the slave cemetery. It is a perfect place to reflect on what the Republican Party is working for: creating an environment for a vibrant economy and strong families, helping people out of poverty, providing better access to health care, finding solutions to the education gap, police reform balanced with public safety, and amplifying the God-given value of every individual.
The Impact of Taxes

Let’s talk taxes since all our elected Democrats are.
Remember that inflation is a hidden tax. It is a powerful (and often unseen and unstoppable) way for a government to pay for its goods and services without raising visible taxes that make people angry. When President Biden promises not to raise taxes on people who make less than $400,000 a year, he is being disingenuous. His big-spending, big-deficit program will raise the price of everything—and everyone will pay the hidden Democrat tax. Most of us are already paying the hidden Democrat tax every time we buy gasoline. This is thanks to the combination of killing the Keystone XL Pipeline, restricting exploration on federal land and a weakening dollar raising the price of oil on the world market. The US average on-highway price of diesel fuel in late May was up 31% from a year earlier, according to Food Business News.
Rising energy prices impact all levels of the food supply chain. So how much did your recent Memorial Day set you back? Have you seen the recent price of lumber or meat! According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, The Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers increased by 4.2 percent. This is the largest 12-month increase since a 4.9-percent increase for the period ending September 2008.
As part of his $2 trillion American Jobs Plan, President Joe Biden is proposing an increase of the corporate tax rate to 28% from its current 21%. I wonder how that will trickle down on us?
How about closer to home. In 2021, Virginia’s combined state and average-local sales tax rate is 5.73%, according to TaxFoundation.org. For context, there are only 9 other states in the U.S. that charge less sales tax than Virginia. That is great news. Let’s keep it that way. Individual income tax is the opposite story. Virginia is the 9th worst state for income tax collections per person.
At the local level, the trend continues. The Board of County Supervisors this year agreed to: a 40cent/pack cigarette tax, a data center tax which will be passed along to all of us, and an increase in the overall property taxes due to rising real estate assessments. According to Tax Rates.org, Prince William County has one of the highest median property taxes in the United States, and is ranked 120th of the 3143 counties in order of median property taxes. There was also a discussion over a 4% meal tax, which thanks to Republicans, was not adopted this year.
So towards what will this money go? According to the Prince Williams Times, the money will fund resource officers in two schools, 2 police officers at the animal shelter, 14 firefighters, upgrades to our fire and rescue buildings, 3 mental health clinicians to go on calls with the police, 10 new staffing positions for a new homeless shelter near Potomac Mills, six new staffing positions to support a child advocacy center for the investigation, treatment, intervention and prosecution of child abuse cases, a 5.5% increase for county schools, and numerous positions for the circuit court, general district court and juvenile and domestic relations courts.
What do you not see in these proposals? You do not see any efforts to support proactive solutions that empower local civil society or address societal problems before they develop. Where are the programs to reduce the number of students per teacher in our schools so our students can get a more competitive education? Where is the support for our churches that provide the most effective and targeted local support services? Where is the reduction to sin taxes that have a disproportionate negative impact on low-income families? Where are the policies to end fraudulent voting that dilute the power of black voters? Where is the support for school choice so parents are not ghettoed into poor performing school districts? Where is the requirement for “Minority Impact Assessments” prior to adopting any new government regulations?
This is why we say we do not have a revenue problem; we have a spending problem. We need to spend our money to proactively solve problems, not attempt a patchwork of societal “fixes” that don’t address fundamental issues. We must focus on the core competencies of government. The current leadership in Richmond wants to attempt these “fixes” which will continue to drive taxpayers away as it has been doing here in Virginia and even more so in left-leaning states across the nation. Lets put a stop to the current trend in Richmond so we avoid the crises currently being faced by states like New York, California, and Illinois. Encourage other Virginians to vote Republican this fall!
The Future of Education

Recently, The Virginia Board of Education revised its teacher performance standards and evaluation criteria to add a standard on culturally responsive teaching and equitable practices. The key paragraph reads:
• Teaching students the skills necessary to communicate and engage with diverse groups in ways that support the eradication of discrimination and bias while mitigating against classroom power imbalances (based on race, ethnicity, gender, identity, ability, and/or socio economic status) that perpetuate fear and anxiety of difference.
If the Virginia Board of Education directive was nothing more than a teaching technique, that would be fine but it is not. It is critical race theory (CRT) in disguise.
CRT argues that racism and white supremacy were defining elements of the American legal system—and of American society writ large—despite language related to "equal protection. Early proponents argued for a contextual, historicized analysis of the law that would challenge what most believed as neutral concepts like meritocracy and objectivity, which, CRT supporters contend, tend to reinforce white supremacy.
This way of thinking has been introduced in our elementary schools thru a program called No Place For Hate. From its own website, the organization suggests the following approach… “Through school-wide, discussion-based and active-learning activities, your students and staff will examine identities, reflect on biased behavior and learn new ways to challenge bias and bullying in themselves, others and society”
Both of these efforts are flawed approaches. They sow division in our society, not unity. They provide justification for violence in the name of social justice. They indoctrinate our youth to ideas that most parents would never embrace for their young children and do so without the parents’ consent.
There is a better way. It is the return of religious values to our schools.
This is not a radical concept. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Bill For Establishing Elementary Schools in Virginia. In that bill he noted the importance of religious instruction, while also excluding specific creeds or religious groups. His comments “but no religious reading, instruction or exercise shall be prescribed or practiced inconsistent with the tenets of any religious sect or denomination” underscores two things. First, there exists a set of common religious tenets, and second, there is a need to avoid embracing individual creeds or confessions that divide the country. Common religious tenets, according to Jefferson, were meant to be the common denominator unifying a diverse country.
Do we not still need a common denominator! Indeed, we do!
What religious values are common to all that could unite the country and act as a counter to the divisive philosophy of critical race theory? Professor Cleon Skousen in his book The 5000 Year Leap noted that there were five fundamentals of religious belief common to all religions at the time of the founding of the United States and so important to “good governance and the happiness of mankind” that the Founders argued these values should be taught in public schools.
These fundamentals are:
1. There exists a Creator who made all things, and mankind should recognize and worship him.
2. The Creator has revealed a moral code for happy living which distinguishes right from wrong.
3. The Creator holds mankind responsible for how we treat each other.
4. All mankind lives beyond this life.
5. In the next life, one is judged for their conduct in this life.
Is there a better set of civic values for our citizens to learn and embrace? Imagine an America where these fundamentals are the common basis of how we see our neighbor. It has happened before - the demand to end slavery in the 1850s, the demand to enfranchise women before 1920, the demand to end segregation in the 1950s and 60s, the demand to have responsible policing now…all draw their justification in the fundamental principles above. We should celebrate and teach them anew!
Chaos at the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and School Board

The new majorities on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and the School Board continue to introduce chaos and division into our county. On June 16, 2020 the Supervisors lost control of a board meeting to a hate filled crowd who ruined the meeting. In terms of county planning they clearly have no clue - responses to inquiries have slowed tremendously. The board seems determined to create the same overpopulation in the western part of the county that exists in the east. A renewables resolution passed without a reasonable plan – it is simply a deceptive workaround the zoning laws. In December 2020 the school board conducted “implicit bias training” which actually creates bias and clings to the idea of judging people by their skin color. It is vital to the future of our county that we send a powerful message to the Supervisors and the School Board this November by electing our diverse, wise, and responsible slate of candidates when they are elected in our primary next month.
Unsustainable Growth

Virginia’s overall economic performance is headed in the wrong direction. According to the latest rankings from richstatespoorstates.org, Virginia is #16 in performance but only 29th in potential. That means we are on a downward trajectory. One of the important factors is how we grow. Most people don’t know that Virginia retains some very short-sighted planning laws. According to § 33.2-353, state planning law requires the State Board of Transportation a minimum of only a 20-year outlook, updated every 6 years. According to § 15.2-2223.1, state law requires urban development planning to be between 10 to 20 years with rail transit planning permitted only up to 40 years. This stands in sharp contrast to New York City which gives the impression of a 100-year planning horizon.1 It took 60 years just to implement. That transportation grid, despite its flaws, has held up relatively well over the years. That kind of in-depth long-term planning is desperately needed now. Northern Virginia is becoming more unaffordable as the overpopulation gets worse. It is unaffordable both in the cost of living and the commute times. The Prince William County Board of Supervisors is on the verge of harming the Rural Crescent with unsustainable growth. Democrats are obsessed with political power – they want to maximize population density, census data, and redistricting in order to maintain the reigns of power and impose their will. At the same time they claim to want to protect the environment. How do they reconcile these two positions? They don’t – it is bipolar politics. In contrast you don’t see low population Republican states rushing to overpopulate just for political power. As a result Republican-led states are actually the more sustainable ones. Join us in the Republican party to develop long term, sustainable plans that will ensure a meaningful life for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Black History Month and Education

February is Black History Month and so we celebrate the achievements and consider the well-being and glide path of all African-Americans. African Americans have overcome tremendous obstacles throughout our history. From Crispis Attucks and Booker T. Washington to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Justice Clarence Thomas, African Americans have been at the forefront of the very human demand for freedom and dignity. During the first three-quarters of the 20th Century there was tremendous progress, particularly with respect to lowering African American poverty. Since then, however, progress has not continued at the same level. A contributing factor to this lack of progress has been the growth of an education establishment that serves the interests of the bureaucracy more than the students, focuses on feelings more than learning, and prioritizes critical theory more than core knowledge. It is this last point that deserves more focus. Critical theory claims to offer a higher level of analysis by rejecting core facts. In such an analysis, each person is entitled to their own truth; never mind that the critical theorist will turn around and tell us what to believe. The problem with that is that it violates the continuum of educational objectives. These start with knowledge and progress towards evaluation the of old, and creation of new ideas. Liberals think they can skip to the last two steps without consequence. Instead, African American educational achievements have languished in these liberal experiments. It is time to return to professional standards of education. In order to provide African Americans a widening pathway to prosperity as they once enjoyed more fully and certainly deserve, we Republicans advocate for a core knowledge curriculum, smaller class sizes for communities of color, school choice, recruitment of teachers that reflect their community, return to professional standards in education, and an end to the classroom to prison pipeline. We must call on our state representatives and our governor to lead this charge. If they won’t do it then they need to get out of the way. Our Republican Party is here, and ready to step into the leadership gap. Join us in this effort!
2020 Virginia Legislative Review

The 2020 legislative year provided some key examples of how the state Democrat majority misgoverns. The two most significant examples are the increase in the minimum wage and the granting of driver licenses to non-citizens. While intended to help low-income workers, in the end the minimum wage increase will hurt entry level workers by effectively denying them employment because employers will not be able to afford to hire them. The granting of driver licenses to non-citizens increases lawlessness and overpopulation/environmental pressures. Three other voter rule changes crack the door open to fraud and reduce the responsibilities of citizenship. The law establishing an election day holiday also erodes the responsibilities of citizenship. One law permitting casino gambling to raise tax revenue will have a negative impact on the local economy - just look at Atlantic City. On the surface the law requiring development of transgender policies claims to serve the interests of equality but as we are seeing in other states, it is leading to violations of Title IX. On the surface one law repealing fornication as a crime is not objectionable, but it is part of a trend of normalizing risky behavior. It should have been tied to legislation to legislation adding protections to the institution of marriage. Five gun law changes which, while reasonable, will have minimal impact on gun crimes since the criminals do not respect the law in the first place. One law regarding immigrant status has reasonable caveats to sustain law and order. Otherwise it would have been unreasonable. Two laws reducing the consequences for drug offenses will likely have minimal impact. One law regarding stops for pedestrians is a reasonable requirement. Two rules on locality changes regarding war memorials and statues which are reasonable. With nine negative changes, eleven neutral to marginal changes, and none positive we get the sense that the Democrat majority is moving us toward the edge of an economic cliff. When you look at all the states across the country, these are not the type of policies that create a thriving and sustainable economy and society. Our policies need to look more like Texas or Tennessee and less like California or New York. That is the recipe for true progress that we should all be talking about with friends and neighbors and writing to our representatives about. We must advocate for Free-Market Friendly, Family-Friendly, and Future-Friendly alternatives to the current harmful policies.
A Critique of Critical Theory

Words have meaning and our political debates are no exception. The mix of rioters and protesters on the left are motivated by a specific set of ideas. It is important to know the roots of these ideas. They are broadly known as critical theory. It consists of four things. First there is opposition to oppression as well as authority in general. This allegedly serves to protect the vulnerable. The reality is that critical theory simply redefines who should be vulnerable. If the critical theorist is successful history shows the result is likely to be another tyranny. This proved true with the first practical case of Napoleon in France and later with Stalin and Lenin in Russia. It continues today in Venezuela where store shelves remain bare in the name of equality, despite vast oil wealth. The second idea of critical theory is the predominance of discourse and dialogue over logic and rationality. This is an outright rejection of the scientific method. Instead, extreme examples are presented as the norm to make emotional appeals. Examples to the contrary are discounted. Thus, numerous examples of African American victims of looting and leftist violence are ignored while a handful of police brutality cases are considered representative by critical theorists. The third idea of critical theory is the critique and counter-critique. This is simply borrowing from the modern scientific method peer review process where new ideas spring forth from the currently competing ideas. This third idea of critical theory contradicts the second. The fourth idea of critical theory is the relativity of knowledge and values. The intent behind this is to create a non-judgmental society. We should not have a culture of condemnation but we also want to avoid a society where people lack good judgement. Overall, this system of thought highlights differences in outcomes but fails to fully examine causes. For example, the survival of the fittest rule taught to students in biology class is not properly considered as a cause of racism, despite the extensive history which ties the two topics together. The approach may rightly identify a problem but it misses the mark in identifying solutions. Everyone should be aware of and warn others of the dangers inherent in critical theory and instead encourage the use of historical and scientific analyses.
2020 Election Review

These are certainly troubling times. Even if Vice President Biden did earn enough electoral college votes it is still important to have vigorous investigations of voter fraud allegations. If those allegations prove unfounded, so be it. The fact that Vice President Biden, his allies, and most media outlets are completely uninterested in the allegations compromises their credibility. Three judges in Philadelphia have been convicted of voter fraud in recent years. The concern is real.1 Why are Democrats like Georgia’s Stacy Abrams who previously questioned election outcomes now celebrating the 2020 election results before all legitimate votes have been confirmed or recounted as needed?
I ask you to follow @va_shiva on Twitter, to view a statistical analysis done by Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, MIT PhD, and others. Their work exposes the "99%+ likely computer algorithm" used in MI to switch 69,000 votes from President Donald Trump to Joe Biden. More than the margin of victory needed to flip MI back to Trump if reversed. The "algorithm" is found in other state voting data as well. Spread the word, as President Trump is highlighting these voting thefts on @realdonaldtrump:
"REPORT: DOMINION DELETED 2.7 MILLION TRUMP VOTES NATIONWIDE. DATA ANALYSIS FINDS 221,000 PENNSYLVANIA VOTES SWITCHED FROM PRESIDENT TRUMP TO BIDEN. 941,000 TRUMP VOTES DELETED. STATES USING DOMINION VOTING SYSTEMS SWITCHED 435,000 VOTES FROM TRUMP TO BIDEN."2
Additionally, why are Democrats not expected to call for calm among their supporters who now wish harm to Trump supporters? Why is the media not condemning Democrat Alexandria Occasio-Cortez’ advocacy of black listing Trump Supporters?3 Why did Abagail Spamberger feel the need to decry the use of socialist terminology but won’t condemn the socialist policies of her political allies? Why is no one talking about the looming social security deficits? These are the troubling questions the media refuse to ask. There were a number of Never-Trumper Republicans who will now have to reconcile their position with the negative outcomes we would see in a hypothetical Biden Administration over the next 4 years, should Vice President Biden win. It is incumbent upon us to kindly and gently explain to them and our Democrat friends and neighbors the logical consequences of this election outcome. One point of consolation in the election was that Republicans across the nation did better down the ballot. The U.S. House Republican caucus actually gained seats and state Republicans had a net gain of three state houses, and one governorship. This sets us up well across the country for 2022.
As we now turn to the 2021 state election cycle, Virginia is at a tipping point. By most economic measures we have gone from being a leader among the states to being about average. The most troubling measure is that Virginia has gone from being a taxpayer friendly state to being on the top ten list of un-taxpayer friendly states as indicated by state to state migration trends.4 Virginia’s unemployment rate is kept artificially low due to it’s proximity to Washington D.C. Regarding being family friendly, Virginia is average for the U.S. as indicated by households with children and fertility rates. Unfortunately these numbers are below a sustainable level. Northern Virginia is horribly congested and the state forbids local planning beyond 20 years. All of these trends indicate that Virginia is not future friendly. These trends have coincided with Virginia’s political lurch to the left. While we are not yet terribly off, we are headed in the wrong direction and it can be attributed in part to the residents of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, D.C., and Pennsylvania who moved here to escape an unaffordable progressive agenda and yet continue to vote for it. We must rollback the growing recreation of that agenda here in Virginia. We implore all of you to talk to your friends and neighbors about this more often so that more rational approaches can become acceptable again.

Ten Reasons to Vote Republican on 3 Nov

Here are ten reasons to vote Republican on 3 November. First, minority unemployment was at record lows prior to COVID. This defied the predictions of the President’s critics. Second, the stock market reacted very favorably for three years prior to the COVID outbreak. That also defies the predictions of collapse made by the President’s critics and renders their economic views suspect. Third, COVID deaths are at ~10% of initial predictions. This is because of the early federal steps to limit travel, the herculean effort to secure our medical supply chain, and the reasonable safety measures put into effect. Democrat led states have nearly twice the per capita COVID deaths as Republican ones. President Trump must be re-elected. Fourth, the President and his allies in Congress have refocused the military to more pressing global threats. This includes modernization efforts not seen since the Reagan Administration. Dan Gade, Rob Whittman, and Aliscia Andrews have the military backgrounds and experience to ensure this continues. Fifth, the President has made and the Senate has approved numerous solid judicial appointments. The role of the judiciary is to interpret law, not create it. Democrats believe the judiciary creates law where the legislature fears to treat. Dan Gade is not afraid of developing creative and effective legislation or voting for judicial appointees who are dedicated to applying that law to the facts. He should be the next Virginia Senator to support these efforts. Sixth, capitalism can be bad at times but it is still better than all the alternatives. That is why taxpayers moving between states tend to move from Blue States to Red States. The same is true internationally – the world has never seen sustained mass migration towards a left-leaning economy. Such a model is inherently unsustainable. Manga Anantatmula knows how we can avoid the pitfalls of a leftist economy and must be sent to Congress. Rob Whittman has the experience to maintain the vitality of capitalism while mitigating its excesses. Seventh, President Trump and his base have more respect for LGBT people than Biden and his base have for people of faith. The President came to office from Hollywood, a base of LGBT support. He was respected in Hollywood until he woke to their unsustainable ideas. Eighth, former Vice-President Biden’s multiple instances of plagiarism shows he is lacking in original thought. In contrast, President Trump is a businessman who turned around the failing central park Wollman skating rink. Ninth, former Vice-President Biden and his base are incredibly condescending. If you’re like me you’d rather be yelled at than talked down to like a child. For example, the former Vice President’s response to the 56% of Americans who think they are better off than four years ago is that they have a bad memory. Democrats have talked down to Republicans for years. A Biden victory will simply reward the violent left destroying many cities across our country. Now that we have a President who pushes back, he is vilified. He is vilified for engaging in the same tough rhetoric that the left has used for years. Tenth, President Trump is the anti-establishment candidate. He was not a politician before being elected President and he remains a non-politician. That is why he is despised so much by the extremist left. Join with us in supporting, advocating for, voting for, and sending President Trump back to the White House, Rob Whittman back to Congress, and sending Dan Gade, Aliscia Andrews, and Manga Anantatmula, to Congress to clean the swamp!

Black lives do matter and clearly there are public policies that have contributed to their improvement. But these policies are quite the opposite of those proposed by the organization that goes by the acronym BLM. The core leaders of BLM seek to destroy the nuclear family and enact a micromanaged economy. BLM wants us to forget that these are the same two proposals that brought great harm to the now-former Soviet block countries. The primary policies which actually make lives better are those that support the integrity of the nuclear family, policies which encourage a culture of lifelong learning, and policies that enable entry-level employment. These three factors existed more prior to the so-called war on poverty. That is why African American poverty declined more rapidly before the “war” than it did after the war was fully in place.1 Welfare policies marginalized fathers by reducing incentives for healthy marriages and conscientious behavior. The negative impact of fatherless homes on people of all backgrounds is overwhelmingly supported by the data. Also, liberals are constantly telling African Americans that the free market is evil. No one can benefit from a market they are taught not to trust or understand. The blame lies squarely with liberal leaders, not the people. It is also important to have educational policies that encourage more lucrative career fields. This can produce a culture which cultivates a desire for higher paying careers. All of these factors are far more significant that the effects of past and current racist behavior. That behavior was and is real and does need to be dealt with through public policy but the fact that African American poverty went down more in the ten years before the war on poverty than the ten years after indicates the causes are more than just racism. Family, education, and entry-level employment are what really make the difference and they are what everyone, including the African American community needs most. Public policies should focus on the most effective change possible. As you consider your vote and talk to friends, family, and co-workers about the November election be sure to review our candidate list as they are best postured to promote these three difference-makers.

Being Future Friendly

The third way of approaching political problems is to be future friendly. History shows that societies collapse when new solutions look good but under the surface the costs actually outweigh the benefits.1 Powerful forces in our society, particularly in the entertainment and education establishments, incline us towards left-leaning ideas which tend to increase complexity. Experience shows us that these ideas do not prove fruitful in building a sustainable future. The Republican Party embraces sustainability by assuming responsibilities at the lowest level practicable and measuring all costs and benefits. We will not compromise the future to save the present. We do that by learning from the past. We do not discriminate between ideas based on when they were developed. We cannot continue to burden subsequent generations with the challenges that we refuse to face today. Our current social and economic structures are simply not sustainable. Instead of focusing on the future, Democrats continue to manufacture a false narrative tying foreign influences to our duly elected President. We must instead focus on what will make our nation stronger for all segments of the U.S. We are sophisticated enough to be proud of our great ideals while also acknowledging past injustices and striving to continue to close the gap between reality and our goals. The Republican Party is best postured to build a better future.

Being Free Market Friendly

The second way of approaching political problems is to be free market friendly. We must avoid being economic micromanagers as well as avoid being economically negligent when it comes to good governance. The Soviet Union micromanaged the eastern block countries, setting conditions for the resistance of the 1980s. If our government becomes a leftist economic micromanager, we will face the same recent fate as Venezuela, Guatemala, and Mexico where people want to leave. Being free market friendly does not mean being consumer unfriendly. It means quite the opposite. As a policy example, not having any minimum wage is negligent but a $15 minimum wage is micromanagement. It excludes the possibility of an entry level wage. We know that entering the workforce has a dramatically positive effect on a person’s economic future. We must protect the entry level wage for new workers as well as existing workers. Additionally, a $15 minimum wage will be passed on by employers to the consumer, thus raising prices. Economics is called the dismal science for a reason. When government gets involved it is to determine between two unpleasant options in order to move us closer to economic justice. Because of this we must be very cautious when considering new interventions. We need an economic climate that allows people who own businesses to thrive. Northern Virginian taxpayers are fleeing the area for more affordable areas to the south and west.1 This must change. If we truly want to empower our African-American brothers and sisters we need to build a job-creating economy, not a micromanaging one. Our Republican Party is best postured to enable a free enterprise-friendly future.

Being Family Friendly

Our political problems require a proper framework for solutions. This is first of three articles on such a framework. The first way of approaching political problems is to be family friendly. Marriage is the first of all social compacts. If this cannot be respected then all other social compacts remain at risk. Matrimony as it was originally conceived was a legal designation to protect a pregnant woman by assigning legal responsibilities to the father. While other aspects of Roman marriage concepts were patriarchal, this one was not malicious in its intent. The Hollywood casting couch shows patriarchy without the accompanying respect for the legal responsibilities associated with conception. Hollywood maintains an unhealthy culture of materialism which is what drove the creation of the me-too movement. The spiritual dimension of life must be respected as well as the material to provide us balance. At some point broadening the definition of family makes any definition meaningless. Democrats offer a decadent post familial culture. Their communities are marked by lower levels of child-producing families. In contrast, Republican communities offer family vitality. A sustainable future requires a certain level of child-producing families.1 The Republican Party is best postured to enable a family friendly future.

Incentivizing Healthy Behaviors

People tend to forget that our health care decisions occur at various levels. First and foremost are decisions that individuals make for themselves. Next comes local health care policies and regulations. After than comes the state decision making apparatus. Finally, there are Federal programs and decision-making processes. The decisions made at the lower levels have the most consequences. As of 2018 the two largest causes of death in the US were heart disease and cancer. Causes of heart disease include diabetes, obesity, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use.1 Causes of cancer include smoking/tobacco, diet and physical activity, sun and other types of radiation, viruses and other infections.2 There are excepts to these causes but they are more common than others. The average age of individual deaths from heart disease was 65. Approximately 87% of cancer victims are older than 50. The average age of these causes is important because it shows they are not random events. These two causes account for 49% more than the next 8 causes combined. We see from these facts the clear link between health outcomes and individual behavior over time. Cost associated with age can be addressed by some form of savings but other costs are addressed through individual decisions. Such a link between individual decisions and outcomes can be found in many other areas of life. That is why decision making must occur at the lowest level possible where the consequences are most significant. It is the government role at all levels to empower the levels below it. This is as true for COVID-19 as much as it is for other areas of decision making. The Republican Party invites all members of the Potomac District to join us in applying this decision-making approach to our most critical problems. On March 24, Virginia State Senator Scott Surovell put out a tweet suggesting the President’s comments on the COVID-19 crisis led to an Arizona couple drinking fish tank cleaner. Such a ridiculous statement is absolutely disgusting as demonstrated by the media disregard – they would rather sweep this under the rug. If the President had not mentioned the drug then Senator Surovell would instead have claimed that the President wasn’t looking for or aware of potential solutions. If the senator is so concerned about events outside Virginia then where is his criticism of the mayor of New York City who waited till March 6th to order supplies, waited till March 15th to close schools, and thought nothing of violating city policy by going to the gym on 16 March? What about the young people on Florida beaches who recklessly partied and who live by the philosophy that “as long as I’m not imposing on someone else”? Surely those things deserve greater criticism? Nothing indicates Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) more than Senator Surovell’s comments, although there are many other instances. For example, Democrat Congressman Gerald Connolly was still obsessed with fast-tracking a baseless and partisan impeachment when the crisis began. We all know that what really bothers Senator Surovell is that the President recognized the looming crisis back in late January and is now providing real leadership during this crisis, seeking to preserve both life itself and our economic way of life. This is not a crisis to exploit but one to solve. We are now seeing more clearly than ever the definition of economics as the “Dismal Science”. What we need are leaders who can make the hard choices, striking a balance between the death index (health) and the misery index (economy). These leaders need to be able to effectively communicate this balance to reassure both those afraid for their health and those afraid for their job. We can’t aggressively pay for preventive or reactive health measures without a vibrant economy. Please join the problem solvers by expressing your disgust to Senator Surovell’s office regarding his comments and encouraging a challenge to him in next year’s election. For this year, actively support your Republican Presidential, senatorial, and congressional candidates who are better postured to strike the delicate balances required of our leaders.
Leftist Regressive Politics vs Republican Optimistic Politics

As predicted here, Virginia Democrats have produced a host of bad bills during this legislative session. From their hostility to the free exchange of goods and services (HB582), to their hostility to organizations which promote stable families (SB868) there seems to be no end to the micromanaging proposals brewing in Richmond. We should not be fooled into thinking they can avoid the problems of California, New York, and Illinois where taxpayers are leaving. Check out these horrible proposals on the Legislative Information System (LIS).1
A similar trend is growing among Democrats in their Presidential primary, particularly as it relates to Senator Sanders and socialism. It's possible he may run away with the nomination following Super Tuesday. Two of Northern Virginia’s Democrat Delegates (Carter and Guzman) were recently named to run Mr. Sanders’ campaign in Virginia. They are now fully out of the closet socialists. This demonstrates the outright radicalism growing in the Democrat party, to include here in PWC. Former Presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who just dropped out a couple weeks ago, stated that the Democrat Party is no longer the party of the working class. Concern is rising among Democrat/Liberal pundits as Senator Sanders rises in popularity on the Left. We should all be concerned.
Instead of the Democrat regressive policies of micromanagement we should embrace an optimistic politics of empowerment and decentralization. Perhaps this is why we are seeing very positive stories about minorities leaving the Democrat party. The President’s campaign has an aggressive minority led coalition to expand the Republican Party2 and we are seeing the record unemployment numbers among minority communities to back it up. Virginia law defines long term planning (Traffic, Environment, and Economy) as 10-20 years. This may give us flexibility but it is ultimately short sighted. The negative impacts of this are seen in transportation and our environment. We are fighting a never-ending battle to improve and expand our road network but we then go and expand the source of the problem by building more housing, business, and industrial facilities. The driver of this is a “keep up with the Jones” attitude toward neighboring counties. When will we look out for our own well-being and sustainability? The current cycle will devastate our environment and leave our children and grandchildren with an unpleasant place to live. It is time to do as was done with the original Manhattan grid* – we need to redefine long term planning as 100 years. That grid wasn’t perfect but it shows what can be done in terms of planning. What should the terrain in Prince William County look like in 100 years? What is the right mix of roads, housing, business, and industry? How do we balance the needs of the Rural Crescent with those people who are obsessed with growth? These are hard questions to ask but if Virginia law remains as it, we will never know. We must fix this law and apply the same principle at the national level. Our future depends on it.

Disturbing Developments in Richmond

The new state legislative session has seen many troubling developments which are key indicators of what we might see at the national level. The efforts to micromanage gun ownership will have a disproportionate and negative effect on African Americans just as the national justice reforms did in the 1990s. These gun laws appear to be unfunded mandates on the counties. They run counter to the intent of the 2nd Amendment. Moreover, these efforts serve primarily to target political opponents rather than address the actual causes of gun violence. Between marijuana decriminalization and other criminal justice reforms, Governor Northam and his allies in the State House and Senate are inviting the criminal problems of other Democrat-led states into Virginia. Raising the larceny threshold may help criminals but it will leave behind store owners and private citizens who are victimized. The business owners will see less effort committed to resolving the injustice done against them by criminals. Moving to economics, if Democrats want more affordable housing, they need to abandon the economic micromanagement which made Northern Virginia so unaffordable in the first place. It hasn’t worked in states like California and New York – why should anyone think it will work here in Virginia? It is clear that the current legislative session threatens Virginia’s status as a business-friendly state. A decentralized approach has been much more effective in states like Texas, Tennessee, and Florida. PotomacGOPPatriots fears the Democrats are doubling down on the bad ideas which led to these problems in the first place. On top of this, the outside money raised by Democrats seems to have dampened their enthusiasm for campaign finance reform. One wonders why the Democrats won’t instead pass legislation forbidding blackface pictures. Concerned citizens must pay careful attention to these issues and speak out to their representatives in order to demand change.
Why Impeachment?

PotomacGOPPatriots hesitates to jump in on this topic but it must be addressed given the hype and as we begin preparations for mid-term elections. The current impeachment proceedings are a distraction from so many other more important topics. Nowhere in the impeachment discussions is the accusing side comparing facts to the law and then conducting analysis. Instead Democrats are misconstruing the facts and failing to confirm assumptions in their analysis. A key fact they overlook is that no party can use a candidacy as an excuse to exploit political positions for personal gain. No one disputes Hunter Biden’s lack of qualifications for his position which brought him into contact with Ukrainians. Clearly his father had an impact – he even stated so publicly. It is right and proper for a sitting President to encourage foreign cooperation with a U.S. investigation when a former Vice President has publicly influenced that nation’s judiciary to the benefit of his family. Democrats claim the Ukraine investigation has been debunked but do not cite a report such as the Mueller report. That is ironic since the Mueller report could not determine that President Trump committed a crime. If that wasn't enough, IG Horowitz's Report conclusively proved that there was nothing to the Trump-Russia hysteria, in fact proving the FBI's 4 FISA warrants to spy on the Trump Campaign were the result of totally discredited, and Clinton Campaign funded, opposition research. Now, even if a Ukraine investigation proved to be a dead end, it is still proper to pursue given that no one disputes the suspicious nature of Hunter Biden’s activities in Ukraine.* When this gets to the US Senate, the overlooked details may finally come out in full, if the House's impeachment charges aren't thrown out immediately. Either way, PotomacGOPPatriots looks forward to the end of this wasteful impeachment process and a focus on more pressing political issues.

The Recent Election

Congratulations to Yesli Vega, Jeanne Lawson, and Peter Candland on their recent victories! Thanks to the others who ran to spread our message of Free-Markets, Family, and the Future. While the other results of the recent election were not what we know to be the best outcome for our district, county, and state, we know we worked hard against the vast amounts of outside dollars which poured in on behalf of our opponents. Those donors are not personal invested in the outcome. Now comes the hard task of holding the other office holders accountable for the results of their decisions for our county and state. We remain resolute in our determination to make Virginia a place where people can thrive rather than a place from which people want to move, as is now the case among taxpayers. Democrats now fully own this problem. We encourage all to join us in the effort to improve the Commonwealth!
Voting Matters

We want to remind all Virginians that voting has consequences. It is vital to remember that as our state has moved left politically, we now have more taxpayers leaving our state than coming in to the commonwealth. People are also moving within Virginia out of high cost of living areas and into more affordable areas. While our state taxpayer losses are marginal, the trend line is not good.1 This is the ultimate measure of whether we are a voter friendly state. When you look at States and counties which attract taxpayers they tend to be more Republican and less Democrat in their governance. This is because we in the Republican party want good governance, but reject micromanagement. You don’t want micromanagement from your employer and we shouldn’t have it in Richmond. Virginia Democrats are more conservative than their national counterparts so as the party moves left they will find themselves more and more isolated in their own party, or they will join the national move to the left. They have a third option - they are certainly welcome to join us in the party of sustainable solutions. Remember these facts when you talk to friends and family and vote Republican on November 5th!

Free Market Friendly, Family Friendly, and Future Friendly

Virginia is at a crossroads. We have an opportunity to return our Commonwealth to one which welcomes taxpayers and families and offers our people a better future. Or we can continue the current trend of taxpayers trickling out of our state. This began shortly after the election of Democrat Governor McCauliffe in 2013. History provides us examples to better inform our current economic decisions to have market friendly policies. Just look at the railroads. Former Vice President Biden claimed the government led the way on the transcontinental railroad. The reality is that the only transcontinental railroad which did not go bankrupt or get bought out by another company was also the only one which got commercial bank loans instead of government loans. This was not a coincidence. The commercial banks held the Great Northern Railroad financially accountable in ways the government did not and the railroad flourished as a result. This principle must be applied at the state level as well. We don’t want tax and regulation refugees fleeing our state. In addition to free market friendly policies, we also need family friendly policies. We know that children benefit from being raised by their biological parents but our tax system remains indifferent to this fact. Virginia ranks as the 23rd worst state in which to be married.1 Who wants to be just below average? Our governor’s nomination of a virulently anti-Catholic person2 to a state council does not support good policy development. We don’t want to create culture refugees just like we don’t want tax and regulation refugees. In addition to family friendly policies we need future friendly policies, which requires us to acknowledge that every public policy question involves hard choices. Such is the nature of problems that cannot be solved by private individuals and organizations. Every issue must be framed by asking, “How do we do ‘X’ while also achieving ‘Y’”. Issue ‘X’ should be the positive outcome we want while issue ‘Y’ should be minimization of the costs associated with ‘X’. In contrast, our opponents do not count costs but instead promise the moon. To break it down, being market friendly and family friendly provides a balanced perspective which makes policies future friendly. PotomacGOPPatriots asks that all consider these three frameworks as you look at the candidates going into this next election and discuss with your friends and neighbors. The Political Consequences of Bowling Alone

The recent shootings have us focused on gun control and that is a worthy debate but there are plenty of folks with guns who don’t harm anyone. We must not overlook other factors at work in these tragedies. Another critical issue is the sense of social isolation felt by so many in our society. Isolated people may turn to dangerous solutions. In 1995 Dr. Robert Putnam published an article titled Bowling Alone. This later became a seminal book. He viewed the decline of bowling leagues as an indicator of the loss of social capital. People are joining groups at a lower rate than they have in recent generations. Another example is that church attendance is down.* Perhaps most significantly, we often don’t even eat together as families. The conversations which occur while cooking and eating meals are often the ones where problems got solved, or at least they have an opportunity to be addressed. More recently Dr. Putnam has stated that “None of the people watching ‘Big Brother’ will bring you chicken soup if you get sick.” This cultural phenomenon runs parallel to the result of a political culture where problems once addressed by the individual or local community are now placed at the feet of the state or national government. When the individual or local community no longer bears primary responsibility, people are more likely to ignore neighbors when tragedy strikes. Democrats who see this as a problem are increasingly marginalized within their party because the entertainment industry driving modern culture is generally aligned with them politically. In contrast, the Republican party advocates for solutions at the lowest level possible, requiring the social capital which results from individuals joining groups. The Roots and Source of Our Civil Rights

It is more important than ever to remember the roots of our civil rights and the efforts that have come before us in order to secure them. It was the Democrats who rammed a radical segregationist Virginia Constitution through in 1901/2, over the boisterous objections of minority Republicans. The 1902 Constitution created a new legal enforcement of Jim Crow and further solidified its social enforcement. July is the shameful anniversary of its passage, which stood in place until it was replaced with today's Constitution in July 1971. Similarly it was Democrats who opposed women’s suffrage while Republicans led the effort for women’s right to vote, securing the 19th Amendment after 41 years of effort.
Democrat President Woodrow Wilson also worked to revive segregation, including in the US Military, while later on Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at a higher rate than Democrats. The vast majority of segregationist Dixiecrats stayed with the Democrat party, dispelling the myth that segregationists became Republicans. In fact, Governor Godwin switched from Democrat to Republican in the process of embracing the civil rights movement. Today’s top VA Democrats with their KKK photos, infanticide rhetoric, sexual assault allegations, and black face photos are continuing the tradition, but more subtlety. Like the Democrats of old, they want to separate everyone into competing groups looking out for their own interests. In contrast, Republicans focus on the common interest and on our rights and responsibilities as citizens of the republic. Social and economic capital are the critical measures of success, not the issues of identity politics. Both our rights and responsibilities are God-given.
